National Password Day?
Yes indeed. While National Password Day apparently was March 15, certainly, it’s never too late to update your passwords.
My friends at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, who spend their days hacking devices like baby monitors, cameras and thermostats, have a few suggestions to ensure that you too can create long and safe passwords that you will still remember.
- A long phrase with mostly letters and a few numbers. More than 15 characters should be sufficient. (e.g. Youmustrememberthis2018)
- Each letter choice has 26 possibilities, while a number only has 10. Do the math.
- Use different passwords for different devices.
- Make sure your Wi-Fi network has a strong password as well.
Realistically, start changing your passwords when you change the clocks, but before you change the batteries on your smoke detector. Or did you forget?
